June has proved to be a popular month for private tours with visitors ranging from escorted American tourist groups to local school children learning about the Victorian era.
Former teachers Emyr and Mandy Price, both Welsh speakers, have joined us to prepare material and to promote and lead school groups at Stradey Castle. Both have worked as guides with the Tin Shed project in Laugharne for a number of years. Emyr is a Director with the Carmarthenshire Tourism Association and Mandy has an interest in local and family history and can lead tours in German. They are able to offer ‘tailor-made’ tours for school groups based on the KS 2/3 Curriculum, and they have been working hard to contact schools and send them plenty of materials about what a visit to Stradey can offer. We have even started to clear the original basement kitchen complete with its range, dresser and meat hooks.
We are very glad to offer local teachers a private visit so that they can see what’s on offer for themselves.
We remain a popular destination for Mothers Union, WI and Merched y Wawr groups as well as PROBUS, U3A and other groups with an interest in culture, history and the arts. For all of these, and plenty more, we can offer tours on week days and weekends, daytime or evening and are very happy to tailor the tours to the stamina, and special interests of the group. We take a special pride in making tours interesting for children, and try and make these as interactive as possible. We are also able to offer tours in Welsh.
While Emyr and Mandy help out (and have a special responsibility for the School tours), Patrick and Claire still lead the vast majority of tours, including the times on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month when we are open to the public.
